Water play

Water play includes pouring at a table, toys intended for the bath and activities designed for pools. Choose the setting first; water depth, supervision, storage and drying make these very different gifts.

Stay with the stated use

Read the exact product instructions for the intended environment and supervision. A toy designed for water is not safety equipment, and its age label does not replace an adult's supervision. Do not move a bath activity into a pool merely because both involve water.

Plan filling and emptying

A water table needs access to water, a suitable surface and somewhere to empty it after use. Consider whether the adult managing the session can reach and move what is required. The assembled dimensions matter even when the basin is empty.

Make drying part of putting away

Check whether water can drain from the pieces and follow their cleaning instructions. Decide where the items can dry before being stored together. If that routine is difficult, a smaller pouring activity may suit the household better than a large set.
