Ages 3

Gifts for 3-year-olds

At three, gift choices can range from make-believe props to first picture games and hands-on art. Decide whether the child wants to invent the activity or join a grown-up in a short, repeatable game.

Choose between a story and a rule

Figures and pretend food let the child decide what happens next. A matching game adds a shared turn structure. Neither requires a more elaborate gift to be worthwhile: choose the kind of interaction the household actually enjoys and the number of people available to join.

Check more than the reading requirement

A game may use pictures but still require waiting, remembering a hidden object or handling a small tool. Read the rules with those demands in mind. A practice round with visible pieces can help explain an activity, but it does not replace the manufacturer's age guidance.

Make art easy to start and finish

Look at the included paper, surfaces and cleanup instructions, rather than counting colors alone. A small set of usable tools can be enough for repeated drawing. If the activity uses dough or paint, check storage and replacement supplies before choosing it for independent play.
