An age range is not a clothing size
Compare the garment measurements with clothing that fits the child now. A costume for an outdoor event may need room for another layer. Do not stretch the editorial age range to include older children when the limiting factor is the size of the outfit.
Sound is an optional extra to the role
The firefighter bullhorn makes sounds; the construction tools support quiet pretend actions. Decide whether the household wants sound effects, and check batteries if they matter to the gift. The costume should still suggest an activity beyond pressing its electronic accessory.

Keep pretend equipment in pretend play
Toy helmets, goggles and medical tools are role-play props. They are not protective or medical equipment. Agree on gentle play rules, keep track of small accessories and follow the label's cleaning directions before putting the outfit back in the dress-up box.

Before you choose
Can I choose costume size by age alone?
Use the garment's listed measurements as well as its age guidance. Compare them with the child and any clothing worn underneath. Closures, movement and the intended indoor or outdoor setting can affect whether a costume is comfortable to use.
Is a bigger accessory set better for pretend play?
Only if its props enable actions the child wants to act out. Check what is included and how pieces are stored. One useful prop for an existing story can offer more meaningful play than many accessories without a clear role.
