Separate enthusiasm from difficulty

Knowing every dinosaur name does not mean wanting a complicated construction set. Ask what the child likes doing with the theme: naming, acting, drawing or building. Then check the exact product age rather than moving to an older kit solely because its subject is familiar.

Look at the instructions together

Illustrated directions can still need an adult to explain sequence, orientation or game setup. Decide whether the gift is intended for a shared weekend or a short activity the child can revisit alone. Reading-free play does not necessarily mean a child can teach themselves the rules.
