Gifts for 4-year-olds

For a four-year-old, compare gifts by the amount of direction they offer. Some children want a picture to copy or a rule to follow; others would rather use figures, construction pieces or art materials to set their own task.

Match the prompt to the child

A pattern board gives a visible target, while loose building pieces leave the result open. Ask whether the child usually copies a model or changes it. The most useful starting point is a task they want to attempt, with enough freedom to repeat it differently.

Plan the people around a game

A cooperative game can give players a shared goal, but it still needs turn-taking and a helper who knows the rules. A solo puzzle solves a different problem. Check player count and the demands of a turn before buying for siblings or a child playing alone.

Check the pieces after the activity

Pretend sets and craft boxes can contain many accessories that need a home. Decide whether they can stay together in a container the child can use. If younger siblings share the room, arrange separate storage for anything outside their age guidance.
