Compare book formats before choosing a title: picture books for shared reading, chapter books for a continuing story, comics for visual storytelling and reference books for dipping into a topic. Check the printed edition as carefully as the subject.

Cover art tells you little about text density, vocabulary or how much the pictures explain. Look at a sample and compare it with a book the child uses now. Publisher age ranges are a starting point; shared reading and independent reading can call for different choices.

Confirm format and series position

A paperback, hardcover and electronic edition are different gifts even when their titles match. For a series, check the volume already owned and whether the story can stand alone. A gift receipt can be useful when the family's shelf is hard to check.

Look for missing activity materials

An instructional book can suggest crafts or builds without including the supplies. Read its contents and the sample activity list before treating it as a complete kit. If the child needs equipment they do not own, include it or select a book they can enjoy immediately.
